YONAKO FALLS · SUZAKA CITY

BEYOND THE KNOWN

An ancient practice,
reimagined as a journey.

For centuries in Japan, people have entered the mountains to step away from everyday life, face nature and purify the body and mind.

Takigyo — the practice of standing beneath a waterfall — is one expression of that tradition.

At Yonako, we do not separate the ritual from the journey that leads to it.

You leave the city behind. Walk through the forest. Approach two immense waterfalls descending from the mountain cliffs. Change into ceremonial white. Continue deeper toward Fudo Falls. And there, before something far greater than yourself, you enter the water.

This is not simply an activity at a waterfall. It is a journey into the mountains — and, perhaps, back to yourself.

THE MOUNTAINS SET THE PACE

The waterfall
is not the beginning.

The journey begins with the first step into the mountains. Yonako Falls lies deep within the mountains of Suzaka, where two monumental waterfalls descend side by side from the cliffs. Fudo Falls and Gongen Falls shape a landscape that has been regarded as sacred for centuries. The deeper you walk, the further ordinary life begins to fall away. There is no need to rush. The mountain sets the pace.

ONE DAY · ONE PASSAGE

Walk.
Purify.
Restore.

01 — THE TREK

Walk into
the mountains.

Leave the road behind and enter the forests of Yonako. Walk ancient mountain paths toward the great falls, breathing the cold mountain air and allowing the rhythm of the landscape to replace the rhythm of everyday life. The destination matters. But so does the path that takes you there.

02 — TAKIGYO

Stand before
the water.

Change into ceremonial white and continue along the rugged path toward Fudo Falls. Takigyo is an ancient Japanese practice of entering flowing water to purify the body and mind. There is nothing to defeat here. The waterfall will not move for you. Steady your breath. Focus your mind. Step beneath the water.

03 — YUGORI

Return warmth
to the body.

After the cold intensity of the waterfall, warmth returns slowly. Through Yugori, warm water is poured over the body in a ritual of cleansing and restoration. The contrast is part of the experience: cold and warmth, tension and release, movement and stillness.

THE SACRED CHALLENGE

Not conquered.
Received.

Takigyo is sometimes imagined as a test of endurance. But endurance is not the point. Nature does not need to be conquered. Standing beneath the waterfall means accepting something that cannot be controlled — the cold, the force of the water, the mountain, and the moment itself.

For a short time, there is very little else to think about. Only breath. Water. And yourself.

Do I need previous experience?

No. Previous experience in Takigyo is not required. Your guide will explain the preparation, breathing and practice before entering the waterfall.

How physically demanding is it?

The journey includes approximately 60 minutes of walking through mountain terrain, including uneven and rugged sections, followed by exposure to cold waterfall water. Guests should be comfortable walking outdoors and be in appropriate physical condition.

After booking, you will receive a detailed preparation guide. Please bring appropriate walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing and a change of clothes.

The mountain decides. Safety always comes first. The route, schedule or Takigyo itself may be changed, postponed or cancelled when weather, water level or mountain conditions make the experience unsafe.

Can I visit Fudo Falls and do Takigyo independently?

No. Fudo Falls is a sacred and protected site. This program operates with the official authorization of Yonako Takiyama Fudoji and is the only program through which this particular Takigyo experience can be reserved. Please do not enter the waterfall or undertake Takigyo independently.

Because this is not designed as a sightseeing attraction. The small group size allows appropriate safety management, personal preparation and the quiet atmosphere necessary for the practice.
